The countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the arrests of its ameer and seven other top leaders ended peacefully across the country without any impacts on life.
No report of any untoward situation has been filed in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
Vehicular movement was normal and traffic congestions were as usual at most of the intersections of the city.
BNP extended its support to the Jamaat hartal while the ruling Awami League criticized BNP's move.
"We extend our support to the shutdown programme,’ said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Earlier on Monday night, police picked eight top Jamaat leaders, including its Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and Secretary General Shafiqur Rahman, up from the capital's Uttara area while they were holding a secret meeting.
