Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed today confirmed that the commission would not deploy army during the upcoming polls in Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations.

The EC secretary came up with the affirmation while briefing journalists after a meeting held at the EC headquarters in the capital today.

“Rather scores of members of the other law enforcement agencies will be deployed during the polls,” he added.

While responding to journalists he also said: “The law enforcement agencies have assured us of a free, fair and neutral election in the two city corporations.”

Earlier, BNP asked the Election Commission (EC) to deploy Army personnel in the upcoming city corporation polls in Gazipur and Khulna.

“Create a level playing field for all candidates for the city corporation polls in Gazipur and Khulna,” a high-level party delegation, led by Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told the chief election commissioner during a recent meeting.

The elections in Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations are scheduled to be held on May 15; Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the date on March 31.

Candidates submitted their nomination applications to the returning officers by April 12 while the deadline to withdraw the candidature was on April 23, according to the polls schedule.

Dhaka’s Divisional Election Officer Rakibuddin Mandal and Khulna’s Divisional Election Officer Md Yunus Ali have been appointed as the returning officers respectively for Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations.

On April 1, BNP decided to join the upcoming Khulna and Gazipur City polls.
