DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia today allegedly said that the BNP leaders and activists engaged in the clash with the law enforcers and torched two police vehicles in the city's Nayapaltan area yesterday.
“The Nayapaltan attackers were identified and all of them were BNP leaders and activists,” he said.
Asaduzzaman Mia came up with the comments while talking with journalists in the capital on Thursday (today).
Mishu Biswas, assistant commissioner of Motijheel zone, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, however, also said: “Police have also been able to identify the person, who set fire to a police vehicle yesterday at Nayapaltan area in Dhaka.”
“Shahjalal Khandaker, a member of the convening committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Paltan unit has been known as the arsonist,” he added.
Earlier yesterday, the angry members of BNP reportedly engaged in a clash with the law enforcers and torched two police vehicles in the city's Nayapaltan area.
According to different sources, a chase and counter chase between the activists of BNP and the law enforcers ensued around 1pm on the day when police obstructed a procession of the BNP heading toward the party's headquarters.
Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and charged batons on the BNP members, leaving at least 50 persons injured from both sides.
Later, the agitated members of the party reportedly set two police van ablaze.
Being informed, three units of firefighters rushed to the spot around 1:20 pm, said firefighters from the control room.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel Division) of DMP Shiblee Noman said the injured policemen took treatment at Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital.
