BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has joined the party nomination board through videoconferencing on the second consecutive day today.

The party has started the interview with aspirants who bought nomination forms to contest in the 11th parliamentary election from Barishal division at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital around 10am while Tarique Rahman joined the nomination board, rejecting objection from the ruling Awami League.

The party nomination board, comprising BNP standing committee members, are present in the interview session.

Earlier yesterday, Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam said the commission will take necessary action if it gets the proof that BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman is interviewing the nomination aspirants through videoconferences.

The EC made the comment on the day soon after Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Qauder drew the attention of the Election Commission in this regard.

Briefing journalists later in the day, the election commissioner said: "We have heard about the matter. We will take action as per the law if proof of his [Tarique] videoconferences is found."

"Meanwhile, we will discuss the issue and fix the next course of action soon," he added.

Drawing the attention of the EC, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Qauder questioned: "Whether a fugitive convicted in two cases can join election procedures.”

According to BNP insiders, Tarique Rahman is interviewing party’s nomination aspirants for the 11th parliamentary elections through a videoconference. The interview will continue till Wednesday.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam, however, on Sunday ruled out AL’s enquiries and said the ruling party has no right to interfere in their party activities.

“It’s totally our concern who will be in the interview board and who won’t,” he added.

On November 12, BNP started offering the nomination papers and sold 4,580 pieces to the aspirants who are willing to contest in the upcoming election under the banner of the party.

On November 8, a fresh election schedule was announced by the Election Commission and according to the new date, the general election would be held on December 30.
