The Election Commission (EC) has allowed 25 reported Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in the upcoming election race, rejecting a plea against allowing them in the polls.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed confirmed the news on Sunday evening.
“There is no legal option to cancel their candidacies in the upcoming general election,” he said.
Helal Uddin also said the commission has no authority to revoke their candidatures since they are contesting the polls as BNP and independent candidates.
While speaking at a press briefing held at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital, the EC secretary also said, “The High Court has directed the Election Commission to dispose of the application filed for cancelling the candidacies of 25 aspirants, so the Commission has no legal jurisdiction to cancel Jamaat leaders’ candidacies.”
