The High Court has commuted the jail term of former minister Nazmul Huda to four years from seven years in a bribery case filed during the tenure of military-backed caretaker government.
The HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam passed the order on Wednesday, modifying the lower court's verdict.
In its order, the HC directed Nazmul Huda to surrender before the trial court in 45 days and ordered the authorities to confiscate Tk2.4 crore that he took as a bribe from a businessman.
Meanwhile, the court stated that Huda's wife Sigma Huda's sentence will be considered as served out because she has earlier suffered in jail in this case.
According to the case statement, Nazmul Huda and his wife Advocate Sigma Huda had taken Tk2.4 crore as bribe from a businessman.
On August 26, 2007, a trial court sentenced Nazmul Huda to seven years imprisonment and Sigma Huda to three years imprisonment.
