Attack on Zafar Iqbal: Two relatives of attacker held

Two relatives of Foyzur Rahman, the attacker on Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal, have been detained in connection with the attack on Saturday midnight.

The detainees are Foyzur Rahman’s uncles- Fazlur Rahman, a joint-convener of the Sunamganj District Krishok League and Abul Kahar Luloi.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Fazlur from Foyzur Rahman’s home, adjacent to the university campus while Abul Kahar was held from Koliar Kapon area of Dirai upazila in Sunamganj.

RAB-9 Sunamganj Captain Lieutenant Commander Foysal Ahmed has confirmed the detention to journalists on Sunday morning.

A laptop from Foyzur Rahman’s home was also seized, the officer added.

Earlier, a case has been filed with the Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet over the attack on Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, a renowned writer and Professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

The university authorities have lodged the case on Saturday night, Ishfaqul Hossain, the registrar of the university, has confirmed the news.

Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR), however, has confirmed Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal is now out of danger.

Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, who sustained a knife attack on the university campus, was admitted to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for better treatment on Saturday night.

Professor Zafar Iqbal, who is the head of the EEE department and a professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department at SUST, came under attack around 5pm on Saturday.
