At least ten people have been killed and around fifty others received injuries in an incident of a stampede and suffocation at Satkania upazila of Chattagram on Monday.
Eight deceased were identified as--Nurjahan, 18, daughter of Alauddin and Tuntuni Begum, daughter of Abdus Salam of Uttor Kolavijan village, under Lohagar upazila of Chattagram, Anwara Begum, 60, wife of Nurul Islam , Saki, 22, daughter of Mobarrak Hossain of Purbo Dohazari village of Chandanaish upazila, Roshida Aktar, wife of Nur Hossain and Rina Begum, wife of Hassan Bhuiyan of Satkaniya upazila, Nur Ayesha, wife of Ibrahim, of Bandarban district and Hasina Akter, wife of Islam of Gojariya village.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Chattagram (South) AKM Emran Bhuiyan has confirmed the deaths to Kalerkantho from the spot.
“All of the deceased are women,” said the ASP. However, the identities of them are yet to be released.
“The incident happened around 10am today when the villagers of Nalua union under the upazila went to collect zakat goods and commodities used for preparing iftar from a house in the area, leaving ten women killed on the spot and injuring over 50 others,” the ASP told Kalerkantho.
Earlier on December 18, 2017, ten people had also been killed and fifty others hurt in an incident of a stampede at the kulkhwani programme of former Chittagong mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in the district.
