KCC polls: AL’s Khalek ahead in 27 centres as counting underway

Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khalek has taken a lead in the early counting of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election with 14,758 votes on Tuesday evening.

In the 27 polling centres including the two where electronic voting machines (EVM) were used, Talukder Abdul Khalek got a total of 14,758 votes while BNP backed mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Manju got 7,529 votes.

Counting of votes in the election to Khulna City Corporation (KCC) is underway as balloting ended peacefully on Tuesday afternoon.

The voting was begun in the KCC polls from 8am and ended around 4pm today in all 41 wards of the corporation without any break amid tight security and festivity.

People in Khulna city were exercising their voting rights to elect competent leaders to steer the city for next five years.

Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) systems have been used in two polling stations--206 and 239-- in the KCC elections.

According to EC sources, a total of 191 candidates, including five for mayoral post, 148 for councilor posts, 38 for reserved posts for women, are vying in the polls while 4,93,093 voters have exercised their voting rights in 1,178 polling stations across the city corporation.

The mayoral contenders are Awami League’s Talukder Abdul Khalek, Nazrul Islam Manju of BNP, Jatiya Party’s Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Maulana Mozammil Haque and CPB’s Mizanur Rahman Babu.

To ensure security during the election, a total of 16 platoons of BGB have been deployed in the city since Sunday while 9,500 policemen and APBN, 4,000 Ansar and VDP members and 900 subsidiary Ansar-VDP members performed their duties during the elections.
