Jatiya Party’s Akkas wins Kurigram-3 by-polls

Jatiya Party candidate Prof Dr Akkas Ali was unofficially declared elected in the by-polls to Kurigram-3 constituency held on Wednesday.

Dr Akkas bagged 82,598 votes while his nearest rival Awami League contestant Prof MA Matin polled 79,895, said Returning Officer GM Sahatab Uddin.

Earlier, voting in the by-election was held from 8am to 4pm without any break.

In Kurigram-3 constituency by-polls, around 363,075 voters have exercised their voting rights in a total of 159 polling stations, the RO also said.

Over 3,000 security personnel, including 2,300 police members, 34 members of RAB and 263 BGB men have been deployed to check any untoward incidents in the polling areas today.

The by-election to this constituency was held as it felt vacant after Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Maidul Islam died on May 11.
