A total of one hundred forty-two prisoners were released from Sylhet Central Jail in a special consideration on Sunday (yesterday).
They were released around 10:45pm, officials in the Sylhet jail have confirmed this to newsmen.
“Of the freed inmates, 36 have been released as they were cleared from the minor charges brought against them by the court while the rest 106 were released on different terms of bails,” Sylhet Central Jail Senior Superintendent Abdul Jalil said.
He also said: “The authorities of the prison came up with the initiatives in a bid to reduce the pressure of the prisoners.”
“They were released as 142 people admitted their committed crimes and as they apologized to the court, they were exempted from their cases,” the official added.
The inmates were accused of various small offences, including suspected involvement in stealing, snatching and prostituting, to different courts, including the chief metropolitan magistrate court and the district session judge’s court, sources said.
