The High Court has directed the government not to approve any industry within 10 kilometres of the Sundarbans area.
In its order, the HC also asked the authorities concerned to submit a list of industries and factories located within the 10 kilometres of the forest area to it within ten months.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order on Thursday, responding to a writ plea filed by Save the Sundarbans Foundation President Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam.
The writ petition sought the court’s directives on the government to relocate the factories and industries located within 10 kilometres of the world’s largest mangrove forest.
Earlier on August 30, 1999, the Environment and Forest Ministry issued a gazette notification declaring 10 kilometres area surrounding the Sundarbans as ecologically critical area.
However, the Department of Environment issued site clearance certificate for some 150 industries in that area since the notification was issued, said the petition.
