An explosion and a fire at a fireworks factory in an area west of Indonesia's capital of Jakarta have killed 27 people and injured 35, media said on Thursday, citing police and firefighters.

Television broadcast images of thick plumes of dark smoke billowing from a factory in Tangerang, reports Independent.

Police speaking to the Associated Press cited a lower death toll than local media, saying 23 had died and around 45 were taken to hospital with serious burns and other injuries.

Hary Kurniawan, chief of police for the Jakarta satellite city of Tangerang, said dozens suffered injuries to varying degrees.
