Are you demisexual, hypersexual or sapiosexual?

A- A A+

Flashback to your early high school days and that awkward biology class when we learnt about reproduction for the first time. The teachers raced through the portion while we awkwardly giggled or prayed that the class would get over fast. For a society that’s painfully awkward discussing sex even in the most clinical sense, talking about sexuality and its multiple layers and aspects largely remains a strict no-no. Many refuse to see beyond the binary male-female genders and heterosexual attraction.

While homosexuality is slowly entering the mainstream conversation, there is much more when you scratch the surface. Here is a quick catch-me-up on everything you wanted to know about sexuality but were afraid to ask… Which category do you belong in?

1. Demisexual

Demisexual is a person who isn’t attracted to anyone until they make a strong emotional connection with that person. The term demisexual comes from being ‘halfway between’ sexual and asexual.

2. Hypersexual

A hypersexual person is someone who has a sexual addiction. According to Psych Central, it’s a dysfunctional preoccupation with sexual fantasy, often in combination with the obsessive pursuit of casual or non-intimate sex; pornography; compulsive masturbation; romantic intensity and objectified partner sex for a period of at least six months.

3. Intersexual

An intersexual person is biologically born with several variations in sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, or genitals that do not fit the typical definitions for male or female bodies.

5. Asexual

Asexual is a pretty common term and an asexual person is someone who doesn’t experience sexual attraction towards anyone/anything at all.

6. Pansexual

Derived from the Greek prefix pan, meaning ‘all’, a pansexual is someone who is sexually, emotionally and spiritually attracted to all genders. Pansexual is often confused with bi-sexual. While bi-sexual particularly means getting attracted to two different genders, a pansexual person is attracted to all genders and not just male and female.

7. Bisexual

A bisexual person is sexually attracted towards both men and women. This sexuality is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientations along with heterosexuality and homosexuality.

8. Sapiosexual

A sapiosexual person is someone who is attracted to intelligence. A good intellect is what turns them on and they find it extremely arousing.
