Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner MD Asaduzzaman Mia has backed the idea of widening controls over social media platform.

He said: "To me, it's better to widen control over different social media platforms rather than shutting those down.

The DMP boss made the observation while attending a debate competition program titled "Uses of social media in preventing adolescent crime" at  Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) on Saturday.

Emphasizing the importance of preventing the incidents of juvenile and cyber-crimes, he further said: "Cyber-security Act is not sufficient to obviate crimes committed through social networking sites. It can be controlled if a bi-literal agreement is undertaken between the state and the authorities of social media platforms. "

Referring to the incident of a juvenile-gang based crime in the capital's Uttara that made law enforcement agencies worried, the DMP commissioner said: "Unrestricted use of social networking sites is one of the major reasons behind the increasing numbers of criminal incidents. "

He also put emphasis on accelerating social consciousness among the people in order to prevent cyber-crimes.
