A man, who spent 29 hours trapped in the engine room of a sunken sand-laden vessel, has been discovered by divers, turning a search for dead bodies into an incredible rescue operation.
Sohag Houlader, 30, was at the engine room of MV Musapur, when the bulkhead capsized and sunk 30-feet into the Shitolokkha River on Wednesday afternoon.
As the vessel sank, rushing water locked Sohag inside the engine room and he failed to come out of it with his fellow workers, said Sohag's brother Sumon.
The members of Fire Service and BIWTA divers launched a rescue operation immediately after the incident happened. However, they failed to trace Sohag.
Later, divers from a private firm conducted another operation and rescued him alive around 5pm on Thursday.
Jahangir Shikder, the diver who rescued Sohag, said: "I rescued him from inside the engine room of the bulkhead. As the room was locked, he got sufficient oxygen there."
Sohag was sent to 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital immediately after he was rescued.
Tahmina Naznin, an on-duty doctor of the hospital, said: "Sohag's condition is stable. However, we will send him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further examination."
