The government is going to purchase another 1.5 lakh tonnes of rice from India to boost its stock.
The cabinet committee on purchase headed by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Wednesday approved two separate proposals to import rice and wheat step by step.
Cabinet Joint Secretary Mustafizur Rahman said: "The government will buy 1.5 lakh tonnes of rice from India through the state-to-state arrangement. We have to pay $440 for each tonne of rice. The formal procedures will start with Nafed Limited, a state-run rice production company of India, soon to import the rice."
The government is trying to replenish its depleted stock through import after production was hit by flash floods. It has taken initiatives to import rice in various ways including even import of 2 lakh tonnes through local traders, according to a source.
