Kalerkantho honours 15 freedom fighters

The Daily Kalerkantho, one of leading and widely circulated newspaper in the country, accorded a grand reception to 15 freedom fighters for their remarkable contribution during the Liberation War in 1971. 

The liberation heroes who were accorded the reception are—Habubur Rahman Shikdar and Abul Hashem Hawlader of Pirojpur, Abul Hossen Molla and Chand Mia of Mymensingh, Hatem Ali of Gazipur, Altaf Hossain of Nilphamary, Abdul Quader of Kurigram, Sheikh Ilias of Khulna, Jasim Uddin of Dinajpur, Gias Uddin of Sherpur, Mostafa Kamal Pasha of Chittagong, Siraj Uddin of Meherpur, Motilal Banik of Brahman Baria, Sushanto Ranjon of Sunamganj and Hemayet Uddin Talukdar of Faridpur.

The national daily honoured them with a crest and Tk 50,000 each during its eighth founding anniversary celebration at the Bashundhara conversion city in the capital on Wednesday.

Earlier in the month of victory, Kalerkantho published the inspiring, bravery and contributional stories of the 15 heroes. 

The freedom fighters placed their highly satisfactory and emotional words after getting the reception in the stunning anniversary celebration programme of the Bangla daily.

Freedom Fighter Siraj Uddin Ahmed said: “The recognition, we got from Kalerkantho, is unbelievable as it came after a long time of our war of independence. I’m grateful to the Kalerkantho for such honour.”

Information Minister Hassanul Haque Inu, State Minister Tarana Halim, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Kalerkantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milon, Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Noim Nizam and Kalerkantho Executive Editor Mostofa Kamal were present in the programme among others. 

The information minister said: “Media in Bangladesh plays their role as the watchdog of democracy. The Sheikh Hasina led government always welcomes any constructive criticism done by the Media.”

Bashundhara Group chairman said: “Kalerkantho took its’ position cautiously against anti-liberation forces, who kept their promptness to take power. We all should escalate our endeavors so that the flag of the country is not fly on the car of anti-liberation figures.”
