The fast unto death demonstrations staged by the teachers of ebtedayee madrasas, the primary level educational institutions under madrasa board, rolled into the fourth day on Friday.
At least 54 teachers had fallen sick while observing their protest yesterday, the third day of their fast unto death programme.
Hundreds of madrasa teachers have been staging their fast unto death demonstration for the fourth consecutive day in front of the capital's National Press Club, demanding nationalisation of all the registered madrasas.
Teachers from across the country gathered in front of the National Press Club and began their demonstration on January 1 under the banner of “Bangladesh Swatantra Ebtedai Madrasa Shikkhak Samity”.
Of the sick teachers, two have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday, said Abu Musa Bhuiyan, joint secretary general of the samity.
He said: "We have submitted two memorandums to the authorities but we are yet to get any response from the government. I am urging Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to come and observe our condition."
