The United Nations has been expecting that in Bangladesh, a climate could be created where free and fair elections could take place.
The spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, came up with the statement in a regular briefing at the UN headquarters on Friday.
Replying to a query, Stephane Dujarric said: “…like in any country, this is our principal position, that a climate could be created where free and fair elections could take place."
Asked what action has been taken from the Secretary-General to release BNP Chairperson Begum Zia as she is facing "politically motivated cases," the spokesperson said: "As you know, we have said that we're following this situation very closely."
"We've already expressed our concern," he added.
