Tarique Rahman, his wife and daughter had surrendered their passports to the Bangladesh High Commission in London four years ago, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam said today.

“They have no Bangladeshi valid passport with them in London now,” the minister also claimed.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam came up with the comments while responding journalists in this connection at a press conference held his Gulshan residence in the capital on Monday.

“I think Tarique Rahman has disowned his Bangladeshi nationality by handing over his passport,” the minister told reporters again.

At a reception programme in London organised by the UK unit of the Awami League on April 21, Shahriar Alam said, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has disowned his nationality from Bangladesh by handing over his passport to the Bangladesh High Commission in London.

Shahriar Alam said: “How can Tarique Rahman make all decisions of BNP despite he disowned his citizenship from Bangladesh? He submitted his green passport to the Bangladesh High Commission in London.”

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s eldest son Tarique Rahman, also a fugitive convict, departed Bangladesh nine years back on health ground.

Tarique was made the acting chairman of BNP after his mother Begum Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case on February 8.

Earlier today, BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman has sent a legal notice to the state minister for his comments on "relinquishing his nationality."

Barrister Kaiser Kamal served the notice on behalf of Tarique Rahman saying that the accuracy of the statement to be proved within 10 days. Otherwise, a case would be filed in this connection.

The notice read: "The statement of the state minister is baseless, fake and intentional. The comments were delivered in order to harass Tarique Rahman politically and socially."

Responding to the legal notice, the minister, however, said: “The legal notice will be faced legally.”
