A total of 16 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed in the Khulna city as the Khulna City Corporation elections are scheduled to be held on Tuesday (tomorrow).
Private TV station News24, a sister concern of the Bangla daily Kalerkantho, has confirmed the BGB deployment today.
According to the election commission, a total of five mayoral candidates, 148 general councilor and 38 reserved-seat female councilor candidates are going to compete in the KCC elections.
The elections in Gazipur and Khulna city corporations were scheduled to hold on May 15 but the election commission yesterday set the Gazipur City Corporation polls on June 26.
The authorities of the election commission have fixed the date after getting permission from the Supreme Court to proceed with the election in Gazipur.
Dhaka’s Divisional Election Officer Rakibuddin Mandal and Khulna’s Divisional Election Officer Md Yunus Ali have been appointed as the returning officers respectively for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations.
On May 6, the High Court had stayed the elections to Gazipur City Corporation following a writ petition challenging the election over boundary complications.
