BNP on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka district requesting to shift its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to the United Hospital in the capital for medical checkup and treatment.

BNP Central Organising Secretary Abdus Salam Azad and Dhaka District BNP Secretary Khondokar Abu Ashafq submitted the memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan around 11:00am today, according to sources.

Confirming the information, Abdus Salam Azad said: “During the submission of the memorandum, we demanded the immediate transfer of BNP chairperson to the United Hospital of the capital. Khaleda’s family will bear all the medical expenses.”

Following the request of Khaleda’s Physicians, the jail authorities offered treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on June 12.

But BNP chairperson refused to receive any treatment from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Since then, BNP and family members of the former prime minister have been demanding to shift Khaleda to the United Hospital in the capital.

Remaining silence on BNP's demand, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said that Khaleda would be offered treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case and she is now serving her time at the jail.
