Barisal City Corporation Mayor aspirant Manisha Chakraborty was allegedly assaulted when she went to cast her voting rights at Barisal BM College centre this morning.

The attack on Manisha Chakraborty, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal-backed mayoral candidate of Barisal City Corporation, was reportedly carried out as she raised her voice against "vote rigging."

Imrul Hakim, president of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, Barishal city unit, said: “Manisha was assaulted physically as she protested vote rigging and irregularities in the polling centre. Two activists of local Awami League carried out the attack in the presence of returning officer.” 

Voting in the elections to Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations began this morning.

The balloting in three cities started at 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break, according to the Election Commission.

The candidates of BNP and other parties alleged that polling agents have been kicked out from different polling centres. 

Presiding Officer Tanveer Hasan told journalists: "We have not received any formal complaint assault the assult of Manisha. I have informed higher authorities about the incident of vote rigging."
