Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate incidents of "gunfight" with police in Chandpur and Rajshahi districts early Thursday.
In Chandpur, an unidentified "drug peddler", aged around 30, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur district early Thursday.
Confirming the information, Shahrasti Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mizanur Rahman said: “Tipped-off that a group of drug traders from Shahrasti were preparing to sell drugs in Hajigang, a team of police conducted a drive to the area to capture them. Sensing the presence of police, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting retaliation that triggered a gunfight.”
“ After the gunfight, police rescued the unidentified bulled-injured from the spot and sent him to Shahrasti Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead,” he added.
Police claimed to have recovered a pistol, 6 rounds of bullet and Yaba pills from the spot.
Three police members also suffered injuries during the drive, according to police.
In Rajshahi, Manik, 30, a suspected drug trader, son of Shahab Uddin of Natun Para in Charghat upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Muktarpur village early Thursday.
Confirming the news, Charghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam said: " Being tipped off that a group of drug traders were gathering in the area, a team of police conducted a drive around 2:45 am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back."
"At one stage, Manik was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. Later, he was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead," he added.
Three policemen were injured in the incident, according to police.
Manik was wanted in 13 cases filed over the drug-related issues.
Police claimed to have recovered a pistol, a bullet and 50 bottles of Phensidyl from the spot.
