The voters of two suspended centers and ward no 7 under Sylhet City Corporation are casting their votes once again to finally elect the mayor of the city and a woman reserved councillor for the ward.

The Election Commission (EC) on July 30 suspended taking votes of Gazi Burhanuddin Gorom Dewan Government Primary School and Hobinondi Government Primary School amid the allegation of vote rigging.

In ward no 7, the Election Commission decided to retake the votes in a total of 14 centres of the ward as Naznin Akter Kona and Sargis Sultana, two contestants of women reserved councillor post, got the equal votes on the election of July 30.

The voters of all 16 centres of the city were seen casting their voting rights freely from the morning.

Although the BNP nominated candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury took lead in the election, the Election Commission decided to announce the result after casting votes of the two suspended centres.

The Election Commission will announce the name of the mayor and a woman reserved councillor for ward no 7 after counting votes today.

BNP backed mayor aspirant Ariful Haque Chowdhury bagged 90,496 votes in 132 centres out of total 134 while AL’s Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran got 86,870 votes, according to Election Commission sources.

Ariful was leading by 4,628 votes while the number of voters in the two centres is 4,787.
