Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Saturday said the current Election Commission, led by KM Nurul Huda, will be able to arrange the next general election in a fair and credible manner if a congenial atmosphere prevails.
“We don’t want any change in the Election Commission as we’d proposed his (Huda’s) name, and he is a simple man. I think, he’ll be able to hold a fair election if a congenial atmosphere is created in the days to come,” he told a press conference.
The press conference was arranged at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh over reaching an electoral negotiation with Khelafat Majlish.
Ershad, a former military ruler, said his party is preparing to field candidates in 300 constituencies as it is uncertain whether BNP will join the next polls or not.
He, however, hinted that their party will change their strategy if BNP joins the polls. “It’s still not the right time to say with which party Jatiya Party will make the electoral alliance.”
The Jatiya Party chief said his party has become stronger with the understanding with Khelafat Majlish. “I’m happy you’ve reached an understanding with us. We’ve got united for establishing Islam. We’ll prove no force is bigger than Islam by assuming power through the next general election.”
He said Khelafat Majlish joined hands with Jatiya Party at a time when the country lacks good governance and anarchy is prevailing everywhere. “We’re now dreaming of going to power. We’ll be able to bring a change in the country, and stop repression and unjust acts.”
Ershad also read out the six points on which the Islamic party made an electoral understanding with Jatiya Party.
The major points are not formulating any law against the holy Quran and Sunnah, reinstating the phrase “absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah in the Constitution, passing a law by Parliament recognising the Qawmi madrasas’ certificate and ensuring the religious freedom of the people of all religions.
