The High Court has cleared the way for the trial court to continue the trial proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman passed the order today, rejecting a revision petition filed by Khaleda's lawyers seeking a stay on the trial proceedings of the case.
Earlier on September 27, Khaleda filed the revision petition with the HC, challenging the legality of the decision of a special court to run her trial in her absence.
In the petition, she sought an HC rule on the ACC and the government to explain why the lower court's decision should not be scrapped.
On September 20, a special court in Dhaka decided to continue the trial of the case inside Old Dhaka Central Jail in her absence.
The former prime minister was sentenced to five years in jail on February 8 in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
