The upcoming Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims after Hajj, is set to be delayed due to the 11th parliamentary polls.
The decision was taken on Thursday after Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan held a meeting with two factions of Tablig Jamaat.
According to the home ministry source, the Election Commission suggested the deferment of the two-phase Muslim congregation for security reasons.
Quoting EC authorities, the home boss said: "It would be tough to ensure adequate security measures for the religious event as it would take place soon after the national election. "
The first phase of Biswa Ijtem was scheduled to be held on January 11-13 while the second one on January 18-20 next.
Meanwhile, the general election will be held on December 30.
The new date for the Ijtema will be decided after the election, said the minister.
