A Court in Dhaka today stated that those who had been sentenced to over two years in jail, won’t be eligible to vie in the national polls.
The candidates whose trials are pending at the appellate division also cannot compete in the polls, the HC further said.
The HC bench of Justice Mohammad Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order today, rejecting separate petitions filed by five BNP leaders seeking suspension of their conviction in graft cases under trial in different courts.
The court’s observation came in line with Article 66 (2)(D) of the Constitution.
On November 8, a fresh election schedule was announced by the Election Commission and according to the new date, the general election would be held on December 30.
