A suspected pirate was killed in a reported “gunfight” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar district early Wednesday.

The deceased is identified as--Tareq, 30, a listed pirate and second in command of Didar Bahini, haling from Kutubdia upazila.

Confirming the news, Rab-7 Cox’s Bazar Camp Company Commander Major Mehedi Hasan said: "Being tipped off, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in the area where two gangs of pirates thronged for sharing ransom money."

"Sensing presence of the elite force, they opened fire on Rab, forcing them to fire back in self-defence. At one stage, Tarek caught in the line of fire and died on the spot" he added.

Rab claimed to have recovered one pistol, two one shutter guns and 23 cartridges from the spot.
