Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda today warned of taking punitive action against those responsible for filing false complaints regarding the electoral process.

“Anyone who does not abide by the instructions of the election officials will have to face seven years of imprisonment as per section 193 of the penal code. A person providing false/fabricated news and violating the instruction of the election officials will face legal action under section 228 of the penal code,” the CEC said while addressing a workshop of ‘Electoral Inquiry Committee’ at Nirbachan Bhaban in city’s Agargaon area.

The CEC instructed the field level election officials to follow the code of civil procedure of 1908 to carry out their responsibilities. A total of 244 joint district judges, session judges and assistant judges who are the members of the electoral inquiry committee, were present at the workshop.

The Election Commission has constituted the Electoral Inquiry Committee with the coordination of judges in every district. The committee has been given the responsibility of conducting judicial process during the election period. Among others, four election commissioners and the EC secretary also spoke at the programme.
