A section of students of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College went on hunger strike today, demanding the release of their arrested teacher, Hasna Hena.
Hasna Hena was sent to jail after her arrest in a case filed in connection with the alleged suicide of ninth grader Aritree Adhikari.
With banners and placards in hands, students gathered and protested in front of Bailey road’s Viqarunnisa Noon School and College over the release of their teacher around 9am.
During the protest, they said that their hunger strikes will continue and academic activities are closed if the teacher is not released.
The members of detectives have arrested Hasna Hena from the city’s Uttara on Wednesday night amid protests of students over the suicide incident while they have been demonstrating since Thursday demanding their teacher’s release.
Earlier, Assistant Professor Hasina Begum, who teaches economics, has been appointed as the acting principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College.
The move came at a meeting held on Friday night amid growing student protest over the death of Aritree Adhikari.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to the police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) directing them to take legal action against three teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College for their rude behaviour with Aritree Adhikari that prompted her to commit suicide.
The three teachers are suspended Principal Nazneen Ferdous, morning shift in-charge Jeenat Akhter and class teacher Hasna Hena.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has sent another letter to the Dhaka Education Board Chairman for taking departmental actions, including their suspension, against the teachers.
Earlier, the previous principal Nazneen Ferdous has been fired from the position on charges of instigating the ninth grader Aritree Adhikari to take her own life.
