The High Court verdict that ordered demolition of the 15-storied building of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is yet to be implemented, said Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik.
He said: "Our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has always been vocal against river grabbing and she has already announced strict action against the encroachers."
"As an environment-conscious person, I delivered the verdict that ordered immediate demolition of the BGMEA building in the capital's Hatirjheel area. I did it despite knowing that BGMEA authorities are influential," he added.
The retired justice made the remarks while addressing a discussion titled "The present and future of eviction drive against river grabbing."
Bangladesh Online Activists Forum arranged the event while its President
Kabir Chowdhury Tanmoy presided over the programme.
Noting that the total area of rivers and all other water bodies should be marked and specified accurately, Justice Manik further said: "I think the government should constitute a separate ministry in order to deal with the issue. The river grabbers should face strict legal action."
