BNP Vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has been detained while returning after a demonstration staged in the capital over BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s conviction in a graft case.
Nazmul Hasan, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) vice-president, has confirmed the news.
Sources from the Detective Branch, however, could not provide any details over the charges against him.
BNP insiders said Shamsuzzaman Dudu took part in a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club in the capital protesting Khaleda Zia’s conviction in a graft case.
While speaking in the programme BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said their party will continue peaceful movement until their chairperson is released from jail.
On February 8, a special court in Dhaka has convicted Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Khaleda Zia was sent to the old central jail on Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka, soon after she was sentenced to five years of imprisonment in the graft case. Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 in Dhaka delivered the verdict.
Khaleda’s son Tarique Rahman and four others have also been sentenced to 10 years in jail in the same case.
