BNP on Tuesday asked the Election Commission (EC) to deploy Army personnel in the upcoming city corporation polls in Gazipur and Khulna.
BNP Standing Committee Member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain has confirmed the news to reporters after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda held in the capital’s Election Commission office in Agargaon this morning.
“Create a level playing field for all candidates for the city corporation polls in Gazipur and Khulna,” a high-level party delegation, led by Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told the chief election commissioner during the meeting.
The elections in Gazipur and Khulna city corporations are scheduled to be held on May 15; Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the date on March 31.
Candidates have submitted their nomination applications to the returning officers by April 12 while the deadline to withdraw the candidature is on April 23, according to the polls schedule.
Dhaka’s Divisional Election Officer Rakibuddin Mandal and Khulna’s Divisional Election Officer Md Yunus Ali have been appointed as the returning officers respectively for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations.
On April 1, BNP decided to join the upcoming Khulna and Gazipur city polls.
