BNP Vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman and 15 other leaders and activists of the party have been detained from Gazipur this afternoon.
They have been picked up from near the party’s Gazipur City polls mayoral candidate Hasnuddin Sarkar’s residence today.
Private TV station News24, a sister concern of the Bangla daily Kalerkantho, has confirmed the news.
Earlier the High Court today stayed the elections to Gazipur City Corporation scheduled to hold on May 15 for next three months over boundary complications.
The court passed the order following a writ petition challenging the election in the city.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the date on March 31.
Candidates submitted their nomination applications to the returning officers by April 12 while the deadline to withdraw the candidature was on April 23, according to the polls schedule.
Dhaka’s Divisional Election Officer Rakibuddin Mandal and Khulna’s Divisional Election Officer Md Yunus Ali were appointed as the returning officers respectively for Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations.
On April 1, BNP decided to join the upcoming Khulna and Gazipur City polls.
