Chawkbazar fire: Rescue mission called off, death toll nearly 80

The rescue mission has been called off after 15 hours of the horrific fire eruption at a chemical warehouse in old Dhaka's Chawkbazar area which claimed life of nearly 80 people so far.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon called off the rescue mission officially around 12:10pm. However, three units of the fire service will remain on standby to avoid further hazards. 

According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital sources, more than 50 injured people are undergoing treatment. Of them, 16 are in critical condition.

The bodies are kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for identification. 

Meanwhile, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) handed over 32 bodies to the relatives after recognizing the identities of the victims.

The process of handing over the bodies was started at around 2:00 pm, said Professor Sohel Mahmud, chief of Dhaka Medical College forensic department.

"After identifying the bodies, we are handing over those to their relatives. However, the unidentified corpses will be subjected to DNA testing," said Professor Dr Sohel Mahmud.
"It may take some time. However, the identities of everyone will be revealed soon," he added.    

Earlier on the day, Professor Sohel Mahmud said a total of 78 bodies were kept at the hospital morgue.

Dhaka district administration will be handing Tk20,000 for each body burial during handover the bodies, said Senior Deputy Commissioner Imrul Hasan. 

The fire broke out at 10:45pm yesterday at a chemical warehouse on the ground floor of the five-storey building-Hazi Wahed Mansion, said Ali Ahmed, director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The fire quickly ripped through three other buildings nearby, including a community centre, he said adding that thirty-seven units of firefighters from 13 fire stations brought the fire under control around 3 am.

The reason behind the fire could not be known yet.

Health Ministry asked the hospital authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the proper treatment of the victims.

Awami League General Secretary and also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, has said all the fire victims will be compensated.

Fire Service and Civil Defence has formed a 3-member committee-- comprising of Deputy Director of Operation and Maintenance of fire service Dilip Ghosh, DAD Abdul Halim and AD Salahuddin to investigate the incident.
