Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, who passed away on Sunday morning, was buried in Rangpur today.
Earlier in the day, a helicopter carrying the body of the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament landed at Rangpur Cantonment around 11:50 am. His fourth Namaz-e-Janaza was held there this afternoon.
He was set to be buried at Combined Military Graveyard in Dhaka today. However, Rangpur and Rajshahi units of the party vowed to keep the body in Rangpur for burial and the partymen had already dug a grave for their leader in his hometown yesterday.
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad passed away on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment in the capital's Combined Military Hospital (CMH). He was 89.
He breathed his last at 7:45 am at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
The former military ruler had been suffering from old age complications and was admitted to the hospital recently.
Born in 1930, the former Bangladesh Army Chief and politician had served as the President of Bangladesh from 1983 to 1990.
