A study at the University of Chicago indicated that the average life expectancy of people in the seven states of the Indian Gangetic Valley will decrease by seven years.
India is the second most polluted country in the world. Such is the case with a study by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago. Nepal is in the worst condition in terms of air pollution just one step above India.
Studies have shown that India has completely failed to prevent pollution. India lags far behind the World Health Organization (WHO) pollution criteria.
As a result, it will have a profound impact on the lives of some 480 million people in the country. The average life expectancy of about 40% of India's population could be reduced by seven years.
Meanwhile, a survey based on the Census of 2011 showed that the average life expectancy of India's population has increased from 67 to 69 years. However, in the future, the average life expectancy of people in the seven states of the Gangetic Valley could decrease. That is what the University of Chicago study indicates.
The survey says that the average life expectancy of people in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal could be reduced by seven years. The average life expectancy of people in those states, including West Bengal, will be reduced to 62 as the average life expectancy is reduced by seven years.
Meanwhile, the Indian Supreme Court has declared a 'health emergency' in Delhi and its surrounding areas to prevent pollution. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted and announced that all schools in Delhi will be closed till November 7.
